Arch Linux Conda Installation and Management#
Conda is a popular open-source tool used to manage software packages and environments. It is especially used in Python development environments, but also offers support for other languages. In this article, we will explain step by step how to install and use Conda, and also cover how to install and manage Conda most efficiently on Arch Linux with best practices.
1. Installing Conda#
Conda can be installed using either the Anaconda or Miniconda distributions. Miniconda is a lighter version of Anaconda and contains only the Conda manager tool. There are some good practices to consider when installing Conda on systems like Arch Linux. Here's the starting point:
1.1 Installing Miniconda#
Miniconda provides the basic installation of Conda and can be preferred to avoid unnecessary packages at the beginning. You can follow these steps to install Miniconda:
- Download Miniconda from the official website.
- Open the terminal and run the Miniconda installation file:
bash Miniconda3-latest-Linux-x86_64.sh
- During installation, you will be presented with a license agreement. Type
yesto accept. - Select the installation folder. By default, Miniconda will be installed in the
~/miniconda3directory. If you want to change this directory, you can specify a different directory during installation.
Recommendation: If you want to install Miniconda in a directory other than the default, you can use the following command during installation:
bash Miniconda3-latest-Linux-x86_64.sh -p /new/directory/miniconda3
- After installation is complete, restart the terminal to activate Conda or run the following command:
source ~/.bashrc
1.2 Checking Conda Version#
After installation, you can use the following command to make sure Conda has been installed correctly:
conda --version
If installed correctly, you can see the Conda version.
2. Updating Conda#
To update Conda, you can use the following command:
conda update -n base -c defaults conda
This command updates Conda in the base environment and downloads the latest version.
3. Managing Conda Environments#
Conda allows you to create independent environments for different projects. This way, you can use different Python versions or packages in your projects.
3.1 Creating a New Environment#
You can use the following command to create a new Conda environment:
conda create -n myenv python=3.10
Here myenv is the name of the environment and python=3.10 includes Python version 3.10.
3.2 Activating an Environment#
You can use the following command to activate the environment you created:
conda activate myenv
3.3 Listing Environments#
You can use the following command to list all Conda environments:
conda env list
This command will return a list of existing environments.
4. Package Management#
Conda is used to easily manage software packages. You can install, update or delete new packages.
4.1 Installing Packages#
You can use the following command to install a package:
conda install numpy
This command will install the NumPy package.
4.2 Updating Packages#
You can use the following command to update an existing package:
conda update numpy
4.3 Removing Packages#
You can use the following command to remove a package:
conda remove numpy
5. Best Installation Practices#
When installing Conda on a system like Arch Linux, it is important to pay attention to some good practices. Here are some important points to consider on this subject:
5.1 Avoid System-wide Installation#
Why Should We Avoid System-wide Installation?
Installing Anaconda system-wide can disrupt your system's order. Instead, it is much healthier to install Anaconda in your own ~/.anaconda directory and activate it only when needed. System-wide installation can generally cause confusion and cause incompatibilities between different Python versions or packages. Conflicts can also occur with other tools in the system.
Recommended Method: Installing Conda in your user directory and using it only when necessary is the best approach. This method helps you keep your system clean and makes package management more controlled.
It is important to say no to the question "Do you want to start Conda?" during installation. This does not touch your .bashrc or .zshrc files and you activate Conda only when needed with the following command:
source <path_to_conda>/bin/activate
This ensures that Conda runs in an isolated manner on your system, thus preserving your order.
5.2 Installation via AUR (Approach 2)#
If you install everything through AUR (Arch User Repository), you can ensure that everything is tracked properly by installing with pacman. However, this method installs Conda system-wide and places it in directories such as /usr/opt/bin or /usr/opt/lib. This can make it difficult to use Conda properly.
Still, thanks to the fact that everything can be easily reversed on Arch Linux, if any confusion occurs in your system, you can quickly uninstall and reinstall it. However, a more controlled installation is always recommended.
5.3 Managing the Conda Base Environment#
After installing Conda, the automatic activation of the base environment in the terminal can sometimes be confusing. This can sometimes lead to unexpected results when you are working in the terminal. If you don't want the base environment to be activated automatically, you can disable it with the following command:
conda deactivate
Or you can add conda deactivate to your .bashrc file to automatically disable the base environment every time the terminal opens.
6. Conclusion#
In this article, basic information about Conda installation, updating, environment management and package management was shared. Adopting best practices in Conda installation on Arch Linux helps maintain the order of your system and makes your software development process more efficient. By using Conda effectively, you can create independent environments in your projects and take your Python development experience to a higher level.
Remember, installing and using Conda properly will help you avoid major problems that can cause headaches in the long run!

Do you wish to update your shell profile to automatically initialize conda?
This will activate conda on startup and change the command prompt when activated.
If you'd prefer that conda's base environment not be activated on startup,
run the following command when conda is activated:
conda config --set auto_activate_base false
You can undo this by running `conda init --reverse $SHELL`? [yes|no]
[no] >>> no
You have chosen to not have conda modify your shell scripts at all.
To activate conda's base environment in your current shell session:
eval "$(/home/friday13/.miniconda3/bin/conda shell.YOUR_SHELL_NAME hook)"
To install conda's shell functions for easier access, first activate, then:
conda init
Thank you for installing Miniconda3!
