A Breath of Nostalgia in Linux: Space Cadet Pinball and Those Secret Mornings

Do you remember those magical days when the internet was not yet this widespread in Turkey, and we secretly opened the computer every morning before going to school, despite the family's "electronic goods" allergy? Accompanied by that slightly crackling sound of the CRT monitor, we would turn the volume of the speakers to the lowest and start Windows XP's famous Space Cadet Pinball game. Solitaire was very boring, Minesweeper was too complex at that age; but the sound of that ball, those lights... That was a real escape.

This legend, which is the exact definition of "old but gold", is actually livelier than ever on our Linux machines today, thanks to reverse engineering. Let's see how we can bring this nostalgia to our modern systems together.

🛠️ Installation: The Arch Way and Others#

As an Arch Linux user, my favorite is of course going through the AUR; however, Flatpak also has its own practicality. I am leaving both ways here.

1. Arch Linux (AUR) Method#

If you have installed Arch, let's continue with that yuceltoluyag@archlinux terminal discipline I mentioned in my Playwright post:

yuceltoluyag@archlinux:~$ yay -S space-cadet-pinball-git

2. Flatpak Method#

If you want cross-system portability, Flathub comes to the rescue:

yuceltoluyag@archlinux:~$ flatpak install com.github.k4zmu2a.spacecadetpinball

🚀 Technical "Level Up": 1024x768 Resolution (Full Tilt!)#

The original game was in 480p resolution and might look a bit "muddy" on modern monitors. However, by using the data files of the version sold under the name "Full Tilt! Pinball" back in the day, we can increase the resolution to a gigantic (yes, it was gigantic for those times) 1024x768 level.

How to Do It? (For Flatpak)#

  1. Run the game at least once so that the data folder is created.
  2. Find the "Full Tilt Pinball" data on Archive.org and extract the contents of CADET.ZIP into this folder: bash yuceltoluyag@archlinux:~$ cd ~/.var/app/com.github.k4zmu2a.spacecadetpinball/data/SpaceCadetPinball yuceltoluyag@archlinux:~$ unzip ~/Downloads/CADET.ZIP
  3. We may need to clean up the old low-resolution files so that they are not prioritized by the game (Sudo might be required): bash yuceltoluyag@archlinux:~$ sudo rm -r $(flatpak info --show-location com.github.k4zmu2a.spacecadetpinball)/files/extra/Pinball

🧠 A Small Note: Do the Rules Change?#

When you use the Full Tilt data, you will notice an interesting detail: while the lights in the launch tunnel blink on and off (toggle) as the ball passes over them in the original version, they stay lit in the Full Tilt version. This makes developing bumpers slightly easier. If you are a "pinball nerd" like me, you will immediately feel this difference.

🥊 Final Word: Why Are We Still Playing?#

Today, we play ray-traced games in 4K resolution, but none of them replace the Pinball played in the morning chill, in a school uniform, with the fear of getting caught by the family. This game is not just software for us; it is a part of our childhood, our pure curiosity for technology, and "good old days."

Install it, give it a try, and if your eyes fill with tears when you hear the sound of that ball, know that you are not alone. Don't forget to try passing the Friday13 high score!

Alright then, goodbye kardaş!
