Playing games on Linux can sometimes literally turn into a detective story, my friends. Yesterday was one of those infamous mornings again: cold coffee, bloodshot eyes from lack of sleep... I decided to install a game based on EA App, Origin, or Plutonium Launcher (especially the Battlefield crowd knows this well) via Lutris and play a couple of rounds. The installation went smooth as butter, and it said "completed". But just as I was about to launch the game, that red slap landed in the terminal: Initial process has exited (return code: 256).
I opened the logs, and what did I see? warning: install completed, but installed file .../Fonts/impact.ttf not found.
I mean, seriously, it's just a basic font! Why on earth would you halt the entire installation script and crash the process just because of a single missing font file? What's more, the culprit behind this is Linux's infamous case-sensitivity curse. Let's dive in and fix this stubborn error step-by-step, just as I did on my own system.
🧐 Why Does Lutris Hang on This Error?#
The background of this issue is actually pure comedy. The installation script downloads this font in the background and saves it as Impact.ttf (capitalized). However, the Lutris and Proton prefix, while pretending to be Windows, stubbornly looks for impact.ttf (lowercase). While this presents no issue whatsoever in the Windows world (NTFS) since filesystems are case-insensitive, in our beloved ext4 or btrfs filesystems, Impact and impact represent two completely different worlds!
Lutris panics when it can't find the file and halts the process. When you say, "Alright, let me just rename this file or reinstall it," you hit a second wall: Lutris refuses to overwrite (override) the libraries it installed in the previous step, saying "Already installed" and throwing an error. 1 A complete dead end, right? But there is a solution—in fact, two different ways.
🛠️ Solution Methods#
Method 1: Trash Bin Detective Work (Manual Search & Copy)#
Most of the time, after downloading the font, the installation script deletes the file and dumps it in the trash while cleaning up temporary directories. So our missing impact.ttf isn't actually far away; it's likely sitting quietly in your system's trash bin.
First, let's open our terminal and search high and low for that runaway file:
yuceltoluyag@archlinux:~$ sudo find / -iname "impact.ttf" 2>/dev/null
If you are lucky, the terminal will spit out something like:
/mnt/steam_depo/.Trash-1000/files/ea-app/drive_c/windows/Fonts/impact.ttf
Awesome! We found the fugitive. Now, let's make sure the Fonts folder exists inside our Lutris prefix:
yuceltoluyag@archlinux:~$ mkdir -p "/mnt/steam_depo/BaBaGames/ea-app/dosdevices/c:/windows/Fonts/"
Note: Don't forget to replace the BaBaGames folder path with your own Lutris installation directory. Typically, this path is under ~/Games/... or on an external drive you specified.
Now, let's copy that stubborn font file from the trash bin to its proper place and break Lutris's stubbornness:
yuceltoluyag@archlinux:~$ cp "/mnt/steam_depo/.Trash-1000/files/ea-app/drive_c/windows/Fonts/impact.ttf" "/mnt/steam_depo/BaBaGames/ea-app/dosdevices/c:/windows/Fonts/"
Restart Lutris and try running the game again. Your issue should be solved!
Method 2: Friday13 Special "Prefix Resetting" Trick ⚡#
If the manual copy method above didn't work, or if the installation script completely locked up due to the inability to override libraries, let me share a legendary trick that I personally applied on my live stream with definitive results.
Warning! This process resets the settings under the prefix, but does not harm your installed game files. To better understand how the Wineprefix architecture works, you can check out my guide on What is Wineprefix and How to Use It?. Still, it's always wise to have a backup, brother.
The logic is simple: we will break the complex library override loop that Lutris got stuck in. But while doing this, we will preserve the precious Fonts folder we found or created.
- Go to the Wine prefix folder (
.../dosdevices/) where the game/launcher is installed. - Delete everything except the
Fontsfolder (all files and other subfolders) under thec:/windows/directory. - Make sure our problematic
impact.ttffile is sitting safely inside this preservedFontsfolder. - Open Lutris and restart the installation script.
Lutris will start building the prefix from scratch. When it comes to that problematic font, it will see that impact.ttf is already lying quietly inside the folder. It will bypass the download and verification steps smoothly, and finish the setup as easy as pie without throwing any library conflict errors!
🎮 Alternative Methods (If the Stubbornness Persists)#
If font errors are still flying around on your system, there are quicker ways to introduce fonts to the Wine environment all at once.
A. Bulk Font Installation with Protontricks#
We can harness the power of the terminal and inject basic Microsoft fonts into the prefix with a single command via protontricks:
yuceltoluyag@archlinux:~$ protontricks <prefix-name> fontsmooth=rgb corefonts
If that doesn't cut it, this command comes to the rescue to install the entire font library brutally:
yuceltoluyag@archlinux:~$ protontricks <prefix-name> allfonts
B. Library Control via Winecfg#
Right-click your game in the Lutris interface, go to Configure, and from the Runner options tab, click Wine configuration. Open the Libraries tab here to manually check the status of the impact library and add it if necessary.
📺 Practical Solution on Live Stream#
You can also check out my live stream recording where I personally resolved this issue using the prefix-resetting method and explained every step in detail. The relevant part starts exactly at 30:58:
At the end of the day, we won this battle against the terminal once again, my friends. If you have any questions or if your find command comes up empty, drop a comment below and we'll solve it together.
Stay safe, and I am finally off to leave myself in the arms of a well-deserved sleep!

Lutris has strict security rules that prevent overwriting already installed packages during runner configuration. This situation can lock up the entire installation even for a single missing font. ↩
